What is Behind the Mysterious Painting? is a Doraemon Halloween episode about a mysterious painting that Nobita’s parents bring home.
Plot[]
Doraemon and Nobita are reading comic books one Halloween night. Doraemon is frustrated with him, and asks why he did not want to go trick or treating with his friends. "Because it's scary!" says Nobita. Doraemon rolls his eyes. "You're such a scaredy cat." he responds "Oh, shut up. we're having fun reading comics here anyway. Stop complaining." Nobita goes back to his comic book, when suddenly someone knocks on the door. "I think that's Mama and Papa, they must've returned from their trip," says Doraemon. They both go downstairs and open the door. Nobita's mom and dad enter, but they have something with them. "Wow, what is that?" asks Nobita His dad grins. "It's a painting! We got it from a yard sale nearby. Isn't it pretty?" Nobita and Doraemon look at the painting. It is a big painting of a woman sitting in a chair, with long hair and a pretty dress. Nobita raises an eyebrow. "It looks really old, papa. Are you sure it's not going to fall apart?" His mom laughs. "Of course not! It's fine, you'll see. We are going to put it in the living room."
Doraemon and Nobita watch as their parents hang the painting in the living room. Doraemon thinks it looks very nice, while Nobita is skeptical. He still thinks it looks very old and might fall apart. It's late at night so their parents tell them to go to bed, so they all go to sleep.
Suddenly, at around 1 am, Nobita wakes up. He hears somebody singing downstairs, and he is confused. It is a woman's voice so he wonders if it is his mom. "Doraemon. Psst," he whispers. Doraemon is fast asleep, so Nobita decides not to bother him. He goes by himself to see what his mom is up to. He goes inside his parents' room, but to his surprise his mom is fast asleep, and his dad too. The singing is coming from the living room.
Nobita becomes terrified and wonders if it a ghost. He grabs a flashlight from his parents' drawer, and shakily goes to the living room and opens the door. There is no one there, but someone is still singing. As he moves closer he realizes it is coming from the painting.
"W-who's there? Who are you?" Nobita stammers. The singing suddenly stops, and the woman in the painting starts to move. She looks at Nobita.
"Don't be afraid," she says. "I was just singing to myself, sorry if I disturbed you."
"What!?" Nobita says. "But you're a painting! How are you talking and moving?"
The woman sighs. "Actually, I am a ghost. I have been trapped in here for years and years because of an evil wizard. I can't escape without someone else's help." She then looks at Nobita. "Will you help me?"
Nobita takes a step forward. "W-what do you need help with?"
"Behind this painting is an incantation. You need to read it and say it out loud 3 times, and then I will be free! Please do it."
Nobita takes the painting off the wall and turns it over. There is some tiny writing in in the corner of the frame. He reads it.
"Ghost of mine, I say with glee, ghost of mine, I set you free."
"Good. Now, two more times." says the ghost.
"Ghost of mine, I say with glee, ghost of mine, I set you free. Ghost of mine, I say with glee, ghost of mine, I set you free."
Nobita reads it 3 times and suddenly notices something else. There is another bit of writing near the top of the frame. He tries to read it, but the painting starts to shake. Nobita lets go of it and stumbles backwards. The woman in the painting flies out of the frame and the empty frame drops to the floor with a crash. The woman is shouting, "I'm free! Finally!" and cackles loudly. Nobita is suddenly having second thoughts, and wonders if he made a mistake.
The ghost looks at him. "You! You are so gullible," she says. "Now you and your family are going back inside that painting, while I live here as a human instead."
"What?" Nobita screams. "You can't do that! Everyone will know! I have friends, and other family members, they will look for me,"
"And I can erase everyone's memories," the ghost laughs. "They will not remember you or your parents."
At that moment Nobita's parents walk in. His mom starts to yell. "Nobita! What is all this noise? It's almost 2 am!" Then they see the ghost, and start to scream. The ghost laughs. "Goodbye, Nobita and his family." Nobita and his parents suddenly start floating upward, and they are sent straight into the picture frame. The end result is what looks like a painting of the Nobi family standing together and smiling. The painting floats back onto the wall, and the ghost takes on a human woman's form, and thinks. Since she does not know who Nobita's friends or family are yet, she decides to erase people's memories one by one if they ever come looking for him. She sits down at the table in her new house and smiles to herself.
The ghost did not realize that there was someone else in the house too. Doraemon was peeking inside from the living room door and had watched everything. He becomes terrified, and quickly flies out of the house with a bamboo copter to get Nobita's friends. They had to save him and mom and dad together.
Doraemon goes to Shizuka, Suneo and Gian's house and bangs on their windows. They are all very sleepy and annoyed, but once Doraemon explains everything they become scared too.
Shizuka asks, "So what do we do now?"
Doraemon thinks of a plan. He takes out the anywhere door and they all go into Nobita's room. Doraemon tells them the ghost is downstairs, and he tries to think of a plan. He tells Gian and Shizuka to distract the ghost somehow, while he and Suneo will try to get the painting and read the incantation that set the ghost free. It must set Nobita and his parents free as well. Suneo asks if he has any gadget that can help, and Doraemon shakes his head. "Ghosts have special abilities, so even if we try to become invisible it can probably tell we are there. And weapons will be useless against it, everything will just go through the ghost," he says. Shizuka and Gian go downstairs while Doraemon and Suneo wait in the backyard. Suneo is terrified and holds on tightly to Doraemon, who complains that it hurts. Gian suddenly jumps in front of the ghost and starts making faces at it.
"Wha-who are you!? How did you get in?" she says.
"Uh, none of your business, lady!" Gian starts to run away, hoping the ghost will chase him. "Shizuka run!" he yells. Shizuka follows him, and the ghost chases them both outside the living room. Doraemon and Suneo jump inside and grab the painting. "Quick let's read it!" says Doraemon. They both read the incantation out loud three times before the ghost comes back. They finish reading the incantation, and they watch as Nobita and his parents flew outside the painting and landed on the ground with a loud thud, His parents rub their heads. "What happened? What's going on?" Nobita sees his friends. "GUYS! You saved us!" he shrieks and hugs Doraemon, Suneo scoffs. "Don't get too happy! Demon lady is still trying to devour Gian and Shizuka."
"Wait what?" Nobita asks just as Gian and Shizuka suddenly run back inside the living room. The ghost follows, still trying to catch them.
"Why did you come back here?! You were supposed to get her far away!" Suneo yells.
"Shut up! This is a small house and we can't just run around the streets at 3 am!" says Gian.
The ghost sees Nobita's family outside and screams in anger. "No! How did you get out? You're ALL going back in!" Nobita's parents and the other kids all scream again, but Nobita remembers something. There was another incantation at the top of the painting which he didn't get a chance to read, so he quickly grabs the frame and looks at it.
"Ghost of mine, you've had your fun," he begins. The ghost yells, "No! Don't read that!" Nobita continues to read.
"Ghost of mine, you've had your fun. Go back in the painting, your time is done!"
With that the ghost is suddenly swept up and there is a bright flash of light. Nobita covers his eyes, and when he opens them his friends and family are all lying across the room, looking exhausted. The painting of the woman in a dress is back again, looking as normal as ever. Nobita's dad speaks first. "What on earth just happened?" Nobita's mom gets up. "It-it seems like you brought home a haunted painting, dear," she says quietly. Doraemon picks the painting up. "I think we should really throw this in the trash," he says. Nobita shakes his head. "No, someone else might pick it up from the trash. Let's throw it in a lake." Doraemon nods. Gian smirks at them. "How about a thank you first? We saved your life, dork!" Shizuka giggles and Suneo nods in agreement. Nobita blushes shyly. "Yes I know. Thank you."
The next day, the five of them go to the lake in the city and toss the painting in there. Nobita asks if it will float, and Shizuka says no, the painting will sink and eventually decompose because of the water. Nobita is satisfied, but then he asks, "That ghost said that she has been stuck in the painting for years. I wonder what she did to get cursed so badly."
"I mean, something horrible probably. She tried to imprison YOU forever!" says Suneo. Nobita nods, but he is still curious as to what the ghost's backstory is. The episode ends with five of them walking back to their homes.
